Effective time management can mean all the difference in your overall quality of life. For instance, do you get to the end of the day and wonder where the time went? If so do you find that you are distracted all the way home by the tasks you know you should have finished? Most people have some kind of experience like this, but it does not have to be the norm. Let`s take a look at strategies you can use to make the most of your professional time so you are not carrying those tasks around mentally during your personal time.
For most of us life is a constant battle to stay organized, we write lists of the things we need to and when we need to get them done. However, when the tasks we have to get done get a little more complex a good checklist might come in handy to make sure that everything gets done properly. Using a template for a checklist you can create detailed lists that include groupings of particular tasks and checklists to make sure that you get every task done in the proper order and reduce the risk of mistakes being made.
Declutter Checklists - good checklist should include every room of your house, and every major surface or item in the room that requires cleaning or straightening. You can create a separate checklist for each room, or a list for each type of room. For instance you could have one list for all your bathrooms, and another for all your bedrooms. You should also keep track of the supplies you use for the cleaning so you can buy more when your supply gets low. Calendar System - there will be checklists that will need attention every single day, and others that will need completion only once a week or once a month. It is always a good idea to schedule your time for running your checklists, if you can. This allows you to control when and how long you work on the chores. Do not beat yourself up if you miss an appointment on your calendar, just pick up that checklist at the next available time you can fit it in. Chore Charts - it is a wonderful idea to get your children involved in the chores from an early age. You can use a chore chart to both remind them of their chores, track their progress and reward them for good work. These values will help your children throughout the rest of their lives.
Balance your work schedule with enjoyable "pick-me-up" activities that help manage your stress creatively. This is not an option but a necessity! Making time for fun and enjoyable activities is all about respecting yourself and also modeling this for your family. Start with small activities like spending time at a park or seeing your favorite movie.
Checklists offer another significant advantage. By reducing the clutter of information you try to keep in your head, you strengthen your capacity to make decisions that make you happier and more effective. Recent tests prove conclusively that tasks as simple as remembering a string of numbers overburden the prefrontal cortex, interfering with effective decision-making. What a waste of personal potential!
Avoid feeling compelled to take on too many responsibilities all at once. Decide in advance what activities and tasks must get done and write these down on your checklist. For less important activities, consider bartering your services with other moms or dumping them altogether. You will be amazed at how much time you have left in the day to do other fun or important things!
